How filming went!

The filming for the project was good. I did it on a Friday night. I started around 7pm and finished at 9:30pm. The time aloud me to shoot all the shots I wanted and more. The equipment I brought with me was a camera, a tripod, a storyboard and a suitcase. I used all my equipment. The first thing I did when we got the place where we was shooting the OTS is have a little meeting and tell all the actors what they where doing and how I would set up each shot. This made the actors know what to do and how to help me. I shot it in the way I wanted it from the shooting sequence. The actors co-operated well and there acting was good as they haven’t acted before. 2 of my actors did film studies and media so they were helping me out by reminding me of continuity error and as such. While I was filming I decided to shoot some shots I didn’t have on the storyboard as it would be good and I would have had more selection and ideas where popping into my head.  I shot each scene about 4 or 5 times so I could get the best shot and play with each shot by making the actor walk faster or something which would look better. Towards the end of the soot it was lightly spitting so it might have damaged the camera. So I made my mind up to stop shooting for 10 minutes until it passed, luckily it did so I could finished it. I checked the weather the day before and it said it would be cold and dry so I was not expecting this but I managed to cope and finish my filming without any errors and without the setting look different.

The Title
while filming i came up with the title name, It will be called 'The last stop'. It fits the theme and idea of it as he misses the bus and makes you think if the main character will die or not.

Notes about filming

Casting
When I picked my actors I did some casting to see which roles would fit the actor and which character was the best for them. As the actors were my friends I knew which character would be the best for each of them, for example for harry partner he is quite aggressive so I made him play one of the kidnappers.
Character development
When I was shooting my OTS I was shooting each clip around 5 or 6 times. I did this to get the best out of the shot, also to tell the actor what they could better while they were acting. This made the character development work as they were then getting better at playing the part and I got the result I wanted.

analysis of OTS including conventions of our genre

we looked at Casino Royale, The Thing, 127 hours and Panic room.
what we looked at:
  • Use of sound incidental
  • Non-diegetic voiceover
  • Credits
  • Establishing shots
  • Exposition
  • How long and when does it end?
  • Editing
  • Mise en scene
  • Colour symbolism
  • Camera angles
Casino royale
This OTS is very loud and has a high tempo, It has a strong beat to it. It fits the Genre of a james bond film with all the action. All of the OTS is animated. Except from the last shot where it is his face. The credits are shown throughout the OTS. In the OTS it is people fighting which fits the genre also shows poker chips and cards. Also the character who is fighting is in a suite which fits the feel of the James Bond films. It flows along very well as it goes from one thing to another through animation and it works.

Panic room
The OTS of this film does not include any characters, But It does have Establishing shots. The sound is atmospheric, It fits with the city sound with the car noises and beeping. The OTS is bassically the credits. The credits are on building tops and made to stand out. They use slow Pan shots to show the name so you can read it and it stands out. It is 1:50 minute long. It drags along as there is not much happening in the shot. It cuts to different shots and buildings.

127 hours
The OTS to this film i very important. It is important later on in the film. The music is quite loud and upbeat. The drums are at a fast tempo. It fades out towards the end of the OTS which makes you know when it's finshed. There is a phone call in it where it goes through to voicemail so you hear another character who you don't know yet. They use the rule of thirds when putting on the credits and adding other peices of video. The establishing shots go from the city to the desert. So they change throughout. It introduces a character first. It shows him getting out of bed and getting ready. It is a long OTS but kit doesn't drag on as you are watching it as it has links and keeps you interested which the director is ment to do. the shot is cut up into 3rds, so at some point throughout the OTS there is 3 videos on the screen and different things happening. the transistions with the thirds slides up and down. There is very low lighting and shows it is the middle of the night or early morning. It includes some 'piece to camera shots' which shows him filming himself. It shows that he is happy and that he is removing himself from soieitcy and the town. It shows alot of traveling, and the contrast between the city and the desert.

Synopsis

It will start of with Ollie (main character) walking to the bus stop. He will stop as the bus stop then turn to face the camera. he will look to the left then to the right. In his left hand he will have a suitcase. then he turns and looks at the bus time table. He realise's that the bus has left and he has missed it. He will sigh then proceed to walk off. the shot will be of his legs when he is wallking of. he will then get out a ciggerette and light it (this is if the actor smokes or not) When he is walking down the road he will realise that there is someone watching him. The people watching him then run out and attack him. After they attack them they then drag him of.

Script

In my OTS there is very little speaking so the script is not going to be big, but if we think of lines while filming we will include them.
The dialouge which we have at the moment is
Ollie (main character): "I am not the person you want!"
Harry (kidnapper): "it's him alright, lets take him back"

The reason there is not much dialouge is becuase it is not needed. Plus there is only one character for the first minute, so he would be speaking to himself.

Time management

Time management is a big thing for me. I am not the most organised person with time to get things done. i always leave it last minute. through this task i hopefully going to keep up to date with the work set and hopefully not fall behind. when filming i am hopefully going to film on one night so the sky and location will look the same without no continuity errors.

Story board for AS task

Storyboard
This is my story board for my main task. it is order. the pictures is what i would like the scene to look like. the text is the infomation of what will happen in the scene. also there is some notes about sound and what i would like from it. When i film this if any idea's come into my head i will film them, even if they are not on the story board.

shooting sequence
the shooting sequnce is the same as the storyboard, it will go in order. This is because it will be easier to do it this way and it is the most simple.

Ideas on OTS

When I was planning I made a mind map and we had a group discussion on idea's and helped each other with our ideas. The idea we had we went over and picked out the good points and the bad points so we narrowed down our idea's and picked out the idea which was best for each of us.

notes about filming

Actors
The actors I am going to use are my friends; I have 5 of them taking part. This is enough for the roles I am going to need. On the Day of shooting I am going to tell them what my opening title sequence is about and how we are going to film this. I will show them my story board so they know what they are shooting. I have already picked who is doing what so no one is confused. When people who are not being film will be my helpers and help me set up shot and hot my things. I haven’t got them to wear costumes except from the main character because I want the realism to come out but I needed the main character to wear heeled shoes so it fits my story board. When picking which people to put into my film i picked the people who would fit my idea of the characters sterotype.

Roles
I gave the actors when they were not in the shot roles to do. i had a continuity artist who looked out for any continuity errors and if we had to do the shot again and put right these errors. Another job someone had was helping me set up the shots and hold the story board, So he would tell me where to put people and create the Mise en scene. I will have People look out for health and safety. So if anything looks unstable or quite risky they would tell me and we would put it right, also looking out for any traffic.

Health and safety
With health and safety I considered this a lot. This is because I will be filming on a road onto the path so I am going to have people who are not in the shot the stand up the road and for them to tell me if any car is coming. Also I told people who was wondering what I was doing that I was filming for my media project. On the fighting scene it was not real fighting I got them to act it out so no one got hurt. At the end when they were dragging him away I got them to hold him in a correct way so it didn’t hurt him.

Props
the props i am going to use are:
  • a breifcase
  • a ciggertte (depending on actors)

notes about filming

Location

The location I picked to film my production is Linacre Avenue. This is a good place to film mine as it fits what I want. The facilities that it has fit what I want. It has a bus stop which I have in my filming and can use. Also at the bus stop there is a lamppost so the lighting should be alright. Also there is a light down the road which I can use as it is in the middle of a car park and next to the road. This looks like a spot light so it can be used in my film. The spot where I am filming in includes a road so for health and safety when I am filming on the road or my actor is on the road there is going to be a person at each end of the road looking out for cars.

Camera
The camera I am using is the Cannon 600D. This will be the first time I use this camera so there may be some camera errors. I am borrowing this camera from a friend. I am going to change the ISO if I can on this camera, the ideal ISO I want to use is 3200 as it will be dark but there will be light so the ISO will need to be able keep it bright enough to see and also not over expose the footage. The lens I am going to be shooting with is going to be a stock 18-55 lens. The focus is going to automatic as it is going to be a moving subject so the focus is going to have to change throughout the shot. The aperture is going to quite low around 11 will be good. The camera will be set up on a tripod so it takes out the shakiness. I am not going to add any additional lighting or change the ISO and aperture throughout the filming as when it is edited it will change loads and will look incorrect. Each shot is going to be taken around 4 or 5 times, this is so I can pick out the best shot and have more chances to get the shot how I want it.
Sound
The sound is recorded of the camera mic. This is not the best thing you could record of but it was all I had access too. I think I will add music to create a better feeling. I am going for the creepy, eerie feel for it.

research

Last lesson we watched Physco a Hitchcock film. We wrote some notes on it and talked about the effects Hitchcock use. Next lesson we are looking at a horror film witch is made in modern day. We should after that write up a summary of what we found out and the contrast between the two

research - film trailers

I am going to watch some horror/thriller film trailers, this will help me with my work because it will show me what professionals do and how they create an effect on you.

http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2128124953/
This is the first trailer I watched. It starts of just like a man filming his children with his camera. Then the next shot is like a black and white fuzzy TV effect, then to the little girl in dark room her face is approaching the camera which is quite an eerie effect which looks out of place as it cuts back to the original filming on the girl. This makes you think why it did that. When it shoots the little girl it always cut to a scene where something weird happens. The first thing you realise is the music. It’s dramatic, it building up to make you jump; this is a major thing to do when creating a horror/thriller film. Then there is like a voice over of the characters over some words, they must mean something towards the film so it keeps you hooked. Then it does loads of 3 or 4 second scenes to create an effect and show different things happening. There are allot of shots looking down on to the girls to show vulnerability. After this scene it goes to one with the two little girls. It shows them talking to each other and filming themselves in the mirror saying bloody Mary 3 times. They think nothing happens. But the audience can see that a person appeared behind them. This is done to involve the viewer. It makes you feel for the girls and you know something’s going to happen so you watch more. Then it's the end of the trailer finishing of with the film title appearing in a way the movie was with the same fuzziness. Watching this showed me that music is a big influence on making the viewer jump. Also keeping the same effect the way through so you know when something’s going to happen.

http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2985204761/
The second’s trailer I watched was "the thing" it starts of with a man doing a voice over when a helicopter fly’s over a land of ice. There is an eerie music playing in the background. Then it cuts to a scene when two people are talking. The music is still in the background giving an effect that you think something’s going to happen. You now can see two people talking using the 180 degree rule. Then it cuts back to the helicopter and the helicopter pilot then them landing. These characters look to be the main ones as they have a talking role and they focus on them. It then has an establishing shot of the scenery with the women walking around them. There is a person talking over the top again. then a man says "let me show you why I flew you 10thousand miles" the music gets louder and more eerie, she looks shocked when she looks at it, we as a audience cannot see it yet so it makes us want to watch on. Then it cuts to a black screen and then a bird eyes view of the object we cannot figure out what it is yet. They cut it out of the ice and about to take a sample. the women is sceptical, when they start drilling in the music starts picking up and getting louder so you except something to happen. You don't see what happens next as it cuts to a scene with a man talking to a bunch of people who was helping with the expiration. Everyone except the girl is happy and drinking and singing. Its cuts to a establishing shot of the house with the music cutting in again. The camera is zooming in to the house and looking down on it. Then there are short little shots of the ice melting. Then the watchman says "do you hear that" with the music slightly getting louder. Then the music gets quieter as a man approaches a window. Some thing grabs him to make you jump. The thing takes him in. then it cuts to a scene of people hearing his scream and then outside with a torch. Its short little clips after this trying to work out what happened. The last clip of this is the girl approaching a corner. Then it goes quiet. Then it grabs her and makes you jump.

I know these are film trailers and we are doing opening sequence but I thought I would watch these to look at the sounds, shoots and editing which I could incorporate them into my opening sequence

Research

I am searching today for techniques people use to create a horror effect. I found a blog with an amateur director asking for techniques used in horror films. There is great response of people responding with tips and techniques.

I might use these in my project.

They talk about lighting, mise en scene, shots.

Evaluation
This was my first try at research, filming and editing. This was a good first try and i learnt from it. This short clip was about a meeting and then some dialouge. I met the brief and did the work. I did struggle making this as it was my first time editing. When i was planning we looked at the 180 degree rule, I used this in mine and didn't break it. the acting was alright but there was some errors which i could of done again but i was short for time. If i was going to do this again i would of manage time more and Planned it better as the planning was small. There was not enough.
